Who are we?
Leiden Student Union is a local student association, and LSVb member union, set up by and for students in and around Leiden. Our goal is to support and provide assistance to students in Leiden and to represent them on a local and national level, advocating for students’ rights and providing services wherever we can.
Frequently asked questions
What do I get out of my membership?
Right now, we provide a platform for our members to advocate for their rights. You gain a group of fellow students who are willing to stand up for you when your interests clash with those of your school, university, landlord, municipality, etc.
In the future we are hoping to provide services such as free legal assistance to our members.
Can I join?
If you are a student, over 16 years of age and living or studying in Leiden, you are most welcome to become a member.
How much time will I have to invest?
While we hope that you will become an active part of the union, you are not required to put any time in. Simply being a member already strengthens the union even if you don’t do anything!
How can I contribute?
Once you sign up, we will get in touch with you to discuss whether you would like to become an active part of the union. Attending our actions is another valuable way to contribute, and you can also help by spreading the word about LSU.
Whats the deal with the different names? LSU, LSBo, …?
Following the education funding protests in 2024 we felt that Leiden was lacking a student union. When we got together to start one, the board of the dormant Leidse Studenten Belangenorganisatie (LSBo) got in touch with us and suggested reorganising LSBo would allow us to build on their connections and their membership of the national student union LSVb.
Why do we need a local union? Don’t we already have the LSVb?
The LSVb (Landelijke Studenten Vakbond) is a federation formed by local member unions, so the LSVb would not exist if there were no local unions. Local Unions are also better able to represent students in their area, negotiating with their schools, local government and other institutions about local issues.
